Wrapping Up the Nonfiction Book
© 2014 James LaFond
MAR/12/14
I am celebrating today, enjoying a marginal brew at the keyboard. Earlier this afternoon I completed my 10th nonfiction book, Taboo You: Way of The Terminal Man. At 54,510 words it is essentially the terminus of the Harm City book project, the sequel to When You're Food. As my final offering in the self-help/memoir/urban survival non-category, I have big hopes.
Maybe this is the one?
Actually, it will probably be my worst seller, because, in this book I have taken on the 'manosphere' crowd who want to put women back in 'their place', as well as recommending that most geeks, nerds and mama's boys commit suicide. So, having condemned the resurgent manly and suggested wussy euthanasia, I have successfully alienated the only males that still read outside of comics and academia.
Never fear though, it is a good read.
Like most books I did not write this lineally but in the following order:
Prologue
Chapter 1
Chapter 7
Epilogue
Chapter 2
Chapter 5
Chapter 3
Chapter 6
Afterword
Front matter
Chapter 4, Tolerating the Soft, on dealing with women and weaklings
My next step is to let it sit for a week. I will then reread it, making corrections, inserting overlooked passages, and smoothing chapter transitions as I go. This will take about 8 hours.
I will then let it sit for a month and write a lot of fiction.
After I have written about as many words as are in this book my mind will hopefully be free enough of the project so that I can proof read it effectively.
The next step is to e-mail the file to Charles.
Some months from then, he will e-mail me the beta copy and I will proof read that, write the promo article on the back end, write a sample article to attach to the promo on the site, and then e-mail Charles the corrections. Days later he will publish it on the site. It beats the hell out of waiting 10 years for a print publisher to get around to actually publishing your book [The Logic of Force]. It is usually 18 months to wait for notification and then another 12 before you get the galleys, then a few months after that until it is in print..
Maybe one day some crackpot publisher will even print Taboo You, and enable me to be hated on the scale I deserve.
