A Working Class Guide to Mankind's Final Hours
© 2013 James LaFond
A Note to the Reader
This is a serial that will appear periodically on this site. It is based entirely on a set of nightmares I had on a Sunday morning in October 2012. I guess my subconscious deserves the credit for this one. I have since expanded the influences to a reunion with an old friend, who will be the chief protagonist of this series, and also the evangelical assault on myself and other Baltimore area bus patrons by Christian pamphlets with the following titles, which will be the titles of the serials they have inspired: All Suffering Soon To End!; Who Loves You?; and what else but Last Rites.
The specifics of my nightmares had when spending the night with two women are detailed precisely as they occurred in my dream in X-White. The only differences are that I changed my identity and the identities, and the relationships I had with, the two women; and in the dream, I was on the first story of the structure. When you read the ending you will understand the gravity of this.
When I finally woke—but barely, it seemed—from these two sequential and consistent nightmares, I wrote them down as one. I then decided to use it as a literary exercise to practice fiction as I was engaged in a non-fiction project. I had no time for research so decided to stick with well-known locales and people I saw regularly when out and about. This required me to set the story on one of the buses I use for my regular commutes. The characters are composites of fellow bus patrons.

Pick Your Hero
Below is a reader poll. Please use the comments feature at the end of the article to post your pick. On January 1st 2014 a winner shall be randomly selected from among the readers who choose the correct ending. The winner shall receive a free copy of the $3 conclusion, and be hailed [in the postscript to the conclusion] as a predictive genius; someone you could not possibly enjoy watching a TV episode with.
Below are eight statements, only one of which shall prove true in the concluding episode: Last Rites.
Pick Your Ending
1. Oldman Jones figures out how to combat the alien invaders and survives.
2. Bighead Tweet discovers the weakness of the alien invaders and saves the group, sacrificing himself in the process.
3. Little Billy Thomas kills the Alien Queen with his Daisy beebee gun and becomes ruler of the planet, the George Washington of a post-apocalyptic world.
4. Jube the Lube discovers the cure for the ‘ally’in enforezdation’ and saves mankind, dying heroically in the act.
5. Stoner Joe discovers the alien weakness, but dies before he can lead the others in defeating the invasive species: Marginal Victory, Aliens.
6. Black Mercedes, the last survivor, is escorted into the mothership to see the Alien Queen, who she seduces, becoming defacto ruler of the galaxy!
7. Nick fights his way onto the mothership, dying heroically in the process, but saving mankind from total extinction.
8. Seriously, you think these fools have a chance? LaFond is writing it, and it is based on a nightmare: Decisive Victory, Aliens!
It would be interesting to read your reasoning behind your selection. You may update your prediction based on later episodes. Episodes #16 thru #19 hold most of the pertinent clues.
