‘Left On Their Own’
Battlefields: The Tankies by Garth Ennis with Carlos and Hector Ezquerra

2009, Dynamite entertainment
This series of three stories involving the five ill-fated Brits assigned to a Cromwell tank on the breakout from Normandy is the most gripping and vividly illustrated comic I have read. Attention is paid to the various English dialects of the soldiers, and the Germans—although hated by the Brits—are not depicted as the purely evil sons of Satan they have come to be known as.
The grisly fate of allied tankers outgunned by German panzers, and of German panzer crews being roasted from the sky by allied air power, gives the feel of an apocalyptic struggle. Tankies is a gritty tale of men and their war machines in a hellish struggle in which they are all disposable.
