This is what happens when you believe in the government. I used to walk through this neighborhood, which is the buffer zone for the more affluent harbor side community to the south and west. These people are like the Aquilonian settlers who pushed beyond Thunder River into the Pictish wilderness in Conan: Beyond the Black River, [‘Beyond The Dim Circle Of Light’] But I don’t see Conan out on the street, so there could be a problem….
They seem like nice people. But nice people have never taken a frontier and claimed it for civilization, and, even when they have lived in civilized state for some generations, their oppressed pets turn it into a wasteland, which is worse than any wilderness. Two months ago I went through the area east and north of where this video was shot, just past the mouth of an alley where I once saw rats feeding in daylight while a giant black dude beat down some little white dude, and it is still a wasteland, the stomping grounds of a gangster rapper named Young Moose and his own community action committee. I suppose, sticking with the Beyond the Black River analogy, Young Moose would be Zogar Sag, who did have the power to summon animals out of the shadowed wilds to do his bidding...

JL: My Fathers old neighborhood was to the west of here, in Morrell Park.

Inevitable outcome for the folks indicated.

They tried. Obvious to me, IMHO, the city is more interested in (gasp) their constituency, or, as Brother Flaherty would intone, "Don't make the black folks mad" (paraphrase) Or at least, the ones involved in streetcorner pharmacuetical sales, prostituition, and dependency. Like the snake that eats itself.

Heinlein had a version of the (inner) city in the future. Walled off from the rest of the area, unpoliced, unaddressed by essential services, and free to go its own uniquely disfunctional way. Gambling and drugs. Gangs, body guards.

Except for the walls, pretty close, already.

Cheerfully yours,

Uncle Geezer, Urban Cracker

I'm glad to have another geezing Urban Cracker on board.

Morrell park was still stocked with a healthy city redneck population in the late 1980s.

Kind of makes the black urbanite look like the Norway rat and the dope he peddles the flees that carried the plague.
