'Why Don't You Open a Boxing Gym?'
A Man Question from Zach

"James, I've been entertained by the number of readers who—I assume—come to the site to read about ghetto mayhem and then plead with you to leave the very place from which you derive your source material. Harm City seems to be your number one draw. But, I could not hope but notice that your most read articles are on boxing. Why don't you open a boxing gym? How about opening a gym in some nice rural town in a wrestling state, where UFC hopefuls might come to you for standup training?"
-Zach
That, Zach, was a very thoughtful suggestion and I thank you.
The answers are pretty simple and go far beyond the fact that I do not have the means to rent or equip any such facility. The fact is, that I stay in Baltimore primarily to facilitate productive writing on violence, aggression, anarcho-tyranny, urban survival and other stuff for which Baltimore has no good use other than being affordable—partially because I am already established here. Yes, I only make $140 per week at my night job, but my rent is only $400 per month and transportation is $20.
The person that is the most astonished that I am poor is the man I coach for, who assures me I could make more in a day coaching than I make in a week stocking. The fact is, I do not like coaching—at all. I coach only as a moral obligation. I was coached by men who asked nothing of me but that I pass their arts on.
I do not even like writing instructional material. In fact, I hate writing boxing and stick fighting articles—hate it! the only reason why I produced the instructional books I did was that two readers paid me and that a half dozen other fighters asked me scores of questions. I would rather scrub dumpsters for a living than coach for a living. Believe me, since I wrote my first boxing manual [under another man's name] I have not made fun of the poor Indonesian English students who write assembly instructions for Chinese-made toys!
