Terminology for the Ten Jab Steps to the “Open” or Rear Hand Side of the Guard

These are the steps that position and power the jab while moving back and to the right [for an orthodox fighter]. Moving to the open side is more difficult and less varied, than moving to the closed side behind the jab. The training and use of these steps will be discussed each in their own section.

5. Side step
6. The C-step
7. Post
8. Shift
9. The scoot
10. U-Hustle
The U-Hustle is an exercise and boxing tactics that incorporates all or most of these backward and rightward steps into one drill or sequence. The scoot is really an application of the side-step.
