I take my ‘field notes’ on the backs of register receipts and staple them together, stacking the makeshift note pads next to the base of my computer terminal. I have spent a day winnowing my notes and have discovered a bundle of quotes that I do not see using in fiction or nonfiction within the year so will preserve them as this article.
“She could never understand why men had to straddle everything they valued.”
“Women never know their sons.”
“Every madman is busy with his little knot.”
-Montserrat Fontes, Dreams of the Centaur
“How long does life go on?
“It’s really fantasy.
“The whole thing’s a fantasy!
“What’s my line?
“It’s a fantasy—all of it!
“I rode the bus today, trying to tell their reasons for travel—so many different faces and figures.
“A fantasy!”
-musing shaman in Baltimore, 2013
“Shut up. You’re just an object; Jackhammer James.”
-Generation X woman, November 2013
